The First National Conference on Information Services in Algerian University Libraries: Reality and Perspectives

May 14th and 15th, 2014

Problem Statement: The university library is a scientific and cultural institution that plays a leading role in enhancing the academic level of students on one hand and the development of scientific research on the other hand, following the evolution of its missions and objectives over time. In the past, the library was merely a place that served as a repository for intellectual production to preserve it and make it accessible to researchers. However, today it has become a perfect scientific institution and an active, lively, and dynamic research cell that contributes to scientific production and its development. It is also an inevitable factor in the information preservation process, its organization, analysis, and dissemination at the university and academic research institutes’ levels. In recent years, university libraries have undergone profound transformations due to the recent information revolution. Information continues to grow day by day, as does the technology contributing to its dissemination and presentation. These two factors (Information Technology) have had a significant impact on university libraries.

So, what is the reality of university libraries in Algeria amid these changes?

To discuss this issue, it is important to raise the following questions:

Do new technologies impact information services in Algerian university libraries?

What are the information services provided by university libraries in Algeria, and what is their reality?

To what extent do university libraries meet the needs of users?
